Hemp and the Endocannabinoid System in Pets
The Endocannabinoid system was first found by researchers who were studying the effects of cannabis on individuals, thus the name Endocannabinoid System. "Endo" is abbreviating the word “endogenous”, which indicates something that starts within the body. A cannabinoid is a term used to explain the compounds that are in charge of activating this system. The Endocannabinoid system is responsible for the psychosocial and physical effects. The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating numerous functions inside your pet's body.
Cannabinoid receptors are present on the cell surface and they monitor the situations outside of the cell. They transfer what they detect within the cell and that triggers the suitable cell response. There are a few kinds of cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system in pets and other animals, however, the two important ones are called CB1 and CB2.
What are CB1 Cannabinoid Receptors
CB1 receptors are present everywhere in the body but are in more concentrated in the brain and the spinal cord. Inside the brain, CB1 receptors are present in the regions that regulate certain behaviors. Such as, CB1 receptors are present in the nerve center (hypothalamus), which is one of the parts of the brain that is in charge of regulating hunger. CB1 receptors have also been distinguished in the nerve endings that are able to control the pain. Receptors are also present in the Cerebellum, Brainstem, Pituitary and more.
What are CB2 Cannabinoid Receptors
CB2 receptors are present mostly in the nervous system and in the immune system. CB2 receptors regulate the inflammation response when they are activated.
Mechanism of action of the endocannabinoid system
Cannabinoids are naturally present in the cannabis plant. There are 113 cannabinoids discovered in the cannabis plant to date. The most prominent cannabinoids are CBD and THC. THC is a psychoactive Cannabinoid that is in charge of the "high" feeling that marihuana users encounter. CBD from hemp is a non-psychoactive Cannabinoid that can reduce inflammation, anxiety and pain without the effects of THC.
Endocannabinoids are compounds that are created inside the body. They bind with cannabinoid receptors and activate them. The body generates endocannabinoids when they are required. Plant cannabinoids like CBD also bind with the cannabinoid receptors when they are ingested. This triggers a similar response for example, decreasing inflammation, blocking pain, and alleviating muscle spasms.
Functions of the endocannabinoid system
- Affects the activity of GI tract.
- Influences the areas of CNS that are responsible for hunger, sleep, anxiety.
- Regulates the inflammation
The essential function of the endocannabinoid system is to regulate the important function of the body called homeostasis, which maintains the optimal internal conditions that every organism needs to be alive and thrive. So, the Endocannabinoid System plays a big role in controlling numerous functions of the body.
CBD helps an anxious pet
When cannabidiol (CBD) enters the endocannabinoid system specialized receptors are activated inside the body. These receptors allow the two-way communication among different body systems. Fundamentally, CBD helps the body calm down and ease tension and anxiety, as receptors in the endocannabinoid system can now harmonize with one another.
Hemp is one of the greatest superfoods of the world
The Cannabinoids present in the hemp plant, including CBD (Cannabidiol), give important health advantages to all warm-blooded animals (dog, cats, equines, humans, etc). The hemp plant is a counterpart to the cannabis plant. Like how orange and lemon trees both have a place with the family of citrus plant.
Hemp is a particular variety of the plant species cannabis sativa L. Because of the comparative leaf shape, hemp is commonly mixed up with marihuana. These two plants are from the species of cannabis. Hemp contains almost no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), which is responsible for the psychoactive effects of marihuana."
Fundamentally, the hemp plant looks the same as the cannabis plant, however, contains a very low amount of THC less than 0.03%. Regardless of whether somebody attempted to smoke hemp-it would do nothing.
Hemp contains 20 amino acids, including the 9 fundamentals that our bodies require. It also has significant measures of essential unsaturated fats Omega 3's and Omega 6's-in a 1:4 proportion which is publicized by significant health organizations as the "magic proportion" for ingestion by mammals.
